I was so obsessed with building apps I forgot how to sleep — a 2,000-year-old clock fixed it
Burnout, insomnia, surfing, and the ancient meridian clock that became a habit.
As a developer, I have a confession: I used to forget time entirely. When I was deep in code, hours vanished. Dinner at midnight. Bed at 3am. I'd look up and realize I'd been sitting for eight hours straight.
I told myself it was necessary — "just push through, ship it, then rest." I wanted everything: to keep building, to keep surfing, to read the business books I never had time for. So I extended my working hours. And the result wasn't more output. It was burnout and insomnia.
The insomnia was the worst part. I'd lie awake at 3am, wired, unable to sleep. I know I'm not alone — so many people struggle with sleep that they turn to medication, and it still doesn't fix the root cause.
The insight
Then I started reading the Huangdi Neijing (the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine) — an ancient Chinese text most of my friends have never heard of (worth a quick Wikipedia read if you're curious). And I found the 子午流注 — the meridian clock.
It divides the day into twelve two-hour windows, each tied to a different organ system, each with clear "do / don't" guidance. And it explained, with uncomfortable precision, everything I'd been doing wrong:
- Modern office life crams eight hours of intense work into one block, with no regard for when the body actually peaks.
- People exercise hard at the wrong times — strenuous exertion right when the body needs to rest.
- Bedtime and wake time are off, so sleep quality quietly collapses.
The ancient wisdom is simple: if you live in tune with your body's natural clock, a lot of health problems resolve themselves — and your work output improves, not despite the balance, but because of it.
Trying it myself
So I rebuilt my day around the meridian clock:
(5–7am) — rise, warm water, gentle Tai Chi / Ba Duan Jin.
(9–11am) — surf when there are waves, train when there aren't; otherwise, focused coding.
(1–3pm) — my best deep-work window for coding.
(3–5pm) — the second exercise window: surf or strength training.
(5–7pm) — light dinner, then sit quietly to settle the mind.
(7–9pm) — read. Finally, the books I never had time for.
(9–11pm) — wind down for real sleep.
It worked. Genuinely. Better sleep, clearer focus, more balanced days — and I still get to code and surf.
Why Meridian speaks to you
The voice reminders are what make it stick. Meridian doesn't just ping — it speaks. At each hour it gently tells you what your body is best at and what to avoid, like a quiet teacher. It's not nagging you to check a box. It repeats the rhythm, hour by hour, until you know it by heart — until you don't need the app anymore.
So I built Meridian — an app that puts this 2,000-year-old clock on your phone. One-time purchase. No subscription, no account, no ads. Everything stays on your device.
Your body already has a schedule. I just made an app that shows it to you.
Your body already has a schedule. Meridian shows it to you.
